CET

The Central England Temperature (CET) is an average of three weather stations based in the locations shown on the map below. The CET data has been logged since the 17th century, so is a good benchmark for comparing recent weather with what happened over 300 years ago. The Met Office averages CET data over 30 year periods for working out what average temperatures are, they use the years 1961 to 1990 and 1971 to 2000.

Map of the three CET weather stations

The coldest year on record was 1740, which had a CET of 6.84ºC, making it 2.64ºC below average.
The warmest year on record was 1990 and 1999 both had a CET of 10.63ºC making them 1.15ºC above average.
The coldest decade was the 1690's, which had an average CET of 8.11ºC (1.37ºC below average) and had 107 of the 120 months of that decade below average.
The warmest decade was the 1990's, which had an average CET of 10.10ºC (0.62ºC above average) and had 83 of the 120 months of that decade above average.
So far the average for the current decade (2000 to 2005) is 10.38ºC (0.90ºC above average).
